Naptime Chats

After explaining to Wyatt what an outlet does (he wanted all the details), he said:

"It's called an outlet because electricity comes out of it, and the electronics you plug in are called inlets because electricity goes in to them."

We always have the best conversations before nap and bedtime. I can't even begin to remember all the ingenious things he has pondered about while lying next to me. It's pretty awesome.

They grow up *SO* fast...

It's true, because we have a teenager now.

In the bookstore tonight Eric asked Wyatt to pick up some toys he had dropped. He gave Eric a face and quickly said, "Whatever."

Eric: "What did you say?"

Wyatt: "What-EVER."

?!?!?!?!?

Ok, really, SO funny. I know I'm supposed to be shocked and all, and I am, but mainly because I have no idea where he learned to do the neck snap like that. I have been practicing in front of the bathroom mirror for close to a decade and I still haven't got it.

We have been battling growing pains for the last few weeks, complete with pulling faces and sticking out tongues, and being the objects of angst from a three year old who is "Really REALLY mad" that we're so mean and life is SO unfair.

Tonight though, I was TOTALLY hiding behind my magazine, trying desperately not to make any eye contact when it happened, lest I loudly collapse and start rolling around on the floor not-so-inconspicuously.

Our THREE YEAR OLD is READING...!!!!!!!

Seriously.

I came downstairs from the bathroom and Eric was reading to Wyatt before bed, but actually really, Wyatt was reading. Sounding out the words. Letter by letter. S-L-O-W-L-Y and then a little less slowly, and then a little faster, putting the sounds together until it made a word he recognized. Words like:

bat
hat
rat
cat
sack
snack
tack
black
nail
mail
sail
snail
lake
cake
rake
snake
red
bed
shed
shred
pen
hen
ten
men
deep
peep
sheep
sleep
beam
steam
stream
kick
lick
chick
lips
zips
slips
drips
lock
sock
clock
block
log
jog
dog
frog
bone
cone
stone
phone
bow
row
snow
crow
skunk

Yeah, he really sounded out all those words tonight. By himself. From a book he has never seen before, so its not like he had them memorized. And some of them are hard. This was the first time he has ever sounded out words.

He just turned THREE.

Is this normal??!!!???!!!???
